Why is a pre-purchase car inspection and thorough vehicle assessment important before buying a used car?

For many of us, the need to buy a used car arises sooner or later—usually only every few years. This is often a stressful process, and for good reason. That's why I offer my on-site vehicle inspection service to help make your decision easier. As an independent car inspector, I provide expert support so you can buy the car you've been dreaming of with confidence.

The cost of buying a used car is only the beginning.
Most buyers don't realize that a poor decision—purchasing a used car without professional help—can lead to extremely high repair bills that are hard to afford.

The first visit to the service center can bring unpleasant surprises.
Unexpected expenses can sometimes reach a significant portion of the car's value, especially if the vehicle has had previous damage that wasn't considered in the purchase price.

Problems detected during the pre-purchase car inspection can often be negotiated off the price.
This means the cost of the inspection pays for itself, as you don't end up spending more at the mechanic for unexpected repairs. Any issues found can either be fixed by the seller before you buy, or help you avoid a bad purchase altogether. If the vehicle is deemed unsuitable during the inspection, don't worry—you've just saved yourself from unexpected costs. Either way, you win!

The price of a car inspection is minimal compared to today's vehicle and repair costs.
If you want even more security against unforeseen repair bills, I recommend my trusted partner, CarGarantie, for extended mechanical breakdown warranty. With this combination and a thorough on-site car inspection, you can minimize the risks of buying a used car—there's no better way to protect yourself.

My car inspection service is generally available in Budapest and the surrounding areas, but I can provide services anywhere upon request, thanks to my network of partners.

Customer feedback on our vehicle inspection service

I needed an English-speaking mechanic to inspect a used car before purchase and I am so glad I found Frigyes (Freddy). When I arrived at the dealership, he was already inspecting the car. Watching him inspect the car, it was obvious he knows his stuff. He answered all my questions and pointed out a couple issues. Thanks to his inspection, I was able to purchase the car with confidence that I was getting a decent car for a good price. The car is holding up great! I would definitely recommend Freddy

Daniel

My experience was great ! Checked everything and gave some details about future use and what will be needed for the car in future! Would definitely recommend , if you are looking for someone to check a car

Mikhail

Great service, can recommend to anyone living far away from Hungary that would like to have a car inspected. Absolutely worth it!!

Used car inspection process

500-point car inspection, reflecting the vehicle's condition at the time of the check.

Visual Inspection

The car inspection begins with a thorough visual check, including body panel gaps, paint discrepancies, and defects. The windshield and side windows are checked for stone chips and cracks. Undercarriage and suspension components are inspected for rust, ideally using a lift if available at the seller's location. Previous damage is identified and professionally evaluated, and repairs are assessed. Interior wear and tear is compared to the vehicle's recorded mileage.

Paint Thickness Measurement

The thickness of the car's paintwork is measured at a minimum of 120 points. The structural elements (such as door frames, longitudinal and cross members, sills, pillars, wheel wells, shock towers, etc.) and all exterior body panels (doors, fenders, etc.) are checked for consistency and signs of previous repairs.

Engine Bay Inspection

Fluids are checked for leaks and quality, rubber components are checked for cracks, body structural parts for integrity, and electrical systems for proper operation. Battery testing, oil pan inspection, and radiator checks are all performed, along with a comprehensive inspection of all visible engine bay components.

Diagnostics

Comprehensive diagnostics for petrol, diesel, hybrid, and electric systems. All error codes—both previously recorded and current—are analyzed in each control unit (including reading the odometer, if supported). Professional analysis using legal and advanced automotive software and instruments (oscilloscope, endoscope camera, testers, OBD code readers, etc.). During the test drive, real-time values (such as DPF, EGR, injectors, high-pressure pump, various sensors, load, pressure or voltage readings) are evaluated in detail.

Exhaust, Rotating, and Moving Components Inspection

Brake and suspension components are visually inspected, along with checks for leaks at the shock absorbers. Tire condition is checked in real-world conditions. Wheels are inspected. Tire tread depth, uneven wear, damage, and production date are all assessed. The play in the steering rack, and possible knocks or noises in the suspension are checked. The condition of the dual mass flywheel and wheel bearing noises are also assessed.

Equipment Check

All vehicle features are tested, including air conditioning (measuring temperature and airflow), switches, extra features, power windows, mirrors, multimedia and navigation, headlights, indicators, wipers, etc.—ensuring everything works as intended.

Test Drive

The final stage of the car inspection is the test drive, where experience from thousands of previous inspections comes into play (drivability, vibrations, noises, wear and tear, etc.). This step is crucial for identifying issues, summarizing findings, providing repair estimates, and offering purchase recommendations.

Frequently asked questions about used car inspection

How should I prepare for a car inspection? Tips for first-time buyers.

First, let me know the make and model of the car. I can advise you on common issues, typical faults, and what to watch out for. Request a free phone consultation—I'm happy to discuss everything with you. Think about your intended or typical use of the car. If you're considering a few cars, let me know. As a non-expert, you might overlook faults that are unacceptable for a professional, which is why it's worth ordering my service. The on-site inspection may reveal issues not previously detected, which could affect the outcome. Please arrive on time so the inspection can begin as scheduled. If you can't attend, let me know respectfully in advance. Of course, unexpected situations can arise—just call or text me and I will handle it.

Is there anything the seller needs to do?

Yes, always let the seller know in advance that a car inspection will take place. Most sellers are fine with this. Sometimes a seller will have already checked the car or had it inspected before. You don't need to tell them any more than necessary—there's nothing secret about the process.

How long does an on-site car inspection take?

It usually takes less than an hour.

How long after booking will the inspection take place?

Typically, inspections are scheduled within 2–3 days after booking. This depends on the seller's availability and my schedule. Sometimes I can do it sooner if another appointment is canceled or a car is sold.

Where does the car inspection take place?

At a location agreed upon with the seller and buyer. The seller should choose a spot where I can park my car and use my equipment. The area should be safe and away from heavy traffic for safety reasons. I cannot perform inspections in city centers—those locations are not suitable. I recommend the parking lot of a shopping center or a quieter area with no traffic.

How can I pay?

Payment is made by bank transfer before the inspection, or in cash on-site. All prices include VAT—a VAT-free invoice is provided. Currently, I work mostly with private individuals, and invoices can only be issued if specifically requested. Thank you for your understanding!

How do I receive the car inspection summary (for inspections without the client present)?

Due to the large file size of photos, I usually send them via MESSENGER or GOOGLE DRIVE. On Google Drive, files are stored for 48 hours before being automatically deleted, so please download them promptly! The inspection summary is generally available on the evening of the inspection day, and, upon request, even immediately after the check—directly from the car!

What if I don't understand something during the inspection or from the documentation?

Feel free to ask! Whether on-site or over the phone, I will show and explain everything clearly. I provide plain-language explanations and notes, so you'll understand even months later—no need to worry about technical jargon.

Can I recommend your service to others?

Absolutely! Thank you! If you are satisfied with my service, please leave a review on Google. Your feedback helps me improve and maintain high standards.

What happens if the seller cancels the car inspection or the car is sold?

If the cancellation is communicated in time, there's no charge. However, if I am already on-site, a 10,000 Ft call-out fee applies.

What if I don't like the car at the inspection location?

As mentioned above, please inform me as soon as possible! If you don't, you will be required to pay the inspection fee.

Is there any warranty on the inspection?

The inspection assesses the current technical condition of the car. Past failures or repairs can only be discovered if there are visible signs. Neither I nor any brand service can guarantee the future reliability of a used car with 100% certainty. Predicting future failures is unfortunately not possible. That's why I recommend CarGarantie's mechanical warranty. Combined with the inspection, this gives you much better protection against unexpected future repair costs.

Common issues a thorough car inspection can reveal

Hidden Rust and Corrosion

Rust often forms in hard-to-see areas of the body and chassis, which a non-expert might not notice at first glance. A skilled car inspector checks these areas in detail, helping you avoid costly repairs later on.

Engine and Transmission Problems

Small irregularities in the engine or gearbox can be detected during an inspection. These issues may lead to serious breakdowns and expensive repairs if not identified in time.

Suspension and Steering Issues

Worn or faulty suspension and steering components can compromise safety. The inspection covers shock absorbers, brakes, brake discs, ball joints, and other suspension parts.

Electrical and Electronic Faults

Modern cars have complex electronics. Diagnostic tools can detect faults in control units, lighting, power windows, or climate control systems during a vehicle inspection.

Odometer Tampering

Unfortunately, odometer rollback is common. An expert can spot suspicious signs based on service records, diagnostics, and condition assessment.

Accident and Structural Damage

Previous accidents, repairs, or structural damage can often remain hidden. An experienced inspector will spot non-factory welds, repainted panels, and can determine if the car has suffered serious damage.

What can happen if you skip the car inspection?

If you skip the pre-purchase car inspection, you risk missing hidden faults and costs. Often, issues appear within the first months that are not covered by the dealer's warranty. An uninspected car might even have accident damage or serious hidden issues, leading to sudden repair costs or, worse, accidents and injuries.

What are the most expensive faults that an expert can uncover during a used car inspection?

Engine Problems

Engine repairs or replacements are among the most expensive issues. A worn, faulty, or low-compression engine can cost owners hundreds or even thousands of euros in repairs.

Transmission Failure

Whether it's a manual or automatic transmission, repairs or replacements can be very costly. Automatic transmissions are especially expensive, and problems often only become apparent during diagnostics or a test drive.

Electric Car Battery Faults

For electric vehicles, the battery is the most expensive component. A worn or damaged battery can cost millions of forints to replace, so its condition must be thoroughly checked during the inspection.

Suspension and Brake System Problems

Replacing major suspension or brake components (shock absorbers, brake discs, ball joints, etc.) can mean significant expenses. These issues can also compromise the vehicle's safety.

Timing System Failures

Timing belt or timing chain problems can even lead to complete engine failure. Repairing or replacing the timing system can cost a lot if issues are not detected in time.

Bodywork and Chassis Rust

Severe rust repairs are very expensive and often only provide a temporary solution. Hidden or untreated corrosion can significantly reduce the value and safety of the car.

On-Site car inspection – Why is it worth it?

Convenient and Time-Saving Solution

The car inspection expert comes directly to the vehicle's location, so you don't have to take the car to a service center or coordinate lengthy appointments. This is especially useful if you want to check multiple cars one after another.

Independent, Objective Opinion

The on-site inspection expert represents only the buyer's interests and has no connection with the seller. You can be sure that the opinion you receive is honest and unbiased.

Every Major Fault Is Revealed

The expert thoroughly inspects the car on-site—including the engine, suspension, bodywork, and electronic systems. Hidden faults and potential repair costs are identified immediately.

Safer and More Economical Purchase

On-site car inspection helps you avoid bad deals and unexpected expenses later. A small investment now can save you hundreds of thousands of forints in the long run.
